Source x Kritikal Karaoke

Source is an ongoing series by The Observatory that detours into the world that intersects moving image/visual/film, with sound/music performances, and vice versa. It maps the contours of our acoustic world by tracing its movements along the periphery of art and culture

In this special year end edition of Source, we present Kritikal Karaoke – a new way of karaoke conceptualised by our friends Farhan (Bras Basah Open: School of Theory & Philosophy), Ila & Bani Haykal

This is a karaoke competition reminiscent of the “Asia Bagus” singing competition in the 90s. We have put together 12 diverse and brave contestants across the local arts scene who will present songs that they think best goes against the neoliberal aesthetic. In short, songs that are anti-neoliberal aesthetics, anti-resilience. A panel of judges and YOU, the audience will have a say in the overall result of the karaoke competition. We have curated this event so that a variety of languages are represented, not merely English.
